Defining Funny: Confessions of a Cynic
Self depreciation is the new comedic mantra. Recently I decided to use the word funny in descriptions of my blog. Talk about a lot of pressure. Granted, I think my writing is hysterical. Not so when I am speaking. I say roughly a bajillion words a day and about 10% are even coherent, and they are not usually related.
So, what does it mean to be funny? I mean, humor is so subjective. Besides potty humor and overly-obvious puns, which are obviously hysterical, my version of comedy probably looks far different from most. The geeky parent life is taking over and my comedic clock expires around 8 pm. And that’s when it actually gets going – questionable.
So using the word funny to describe myself felt weird. And yet most positive adjectives do. I can use funny like a negative: funny smelling, funny acting, funny looking, but not genuinely funny. That would be self-indulgent. Then there is the word pretty. Pretty cool, but not pretty. That sets feminism back and you are a feminist. Careful of contradictions. Oh yeah, and you cannot call yourself pretty, don’t even think it. You must be vapid and shallow to take pride in the way you look. But don’t neglect yourself, God gave you this wonderful gift.
It is very difficult to use positive adjectives when describing myself. I can gladly flower other’s with compliments, but it feels wrong to do the same for myself somehow. And yet, I think we need to give ourself a pat on the back every once in a while. Dang, Mama, you’ve still got it. Wow! You are rocking those flip-flops like a champ.
Breaking Down Barriers
We walk in a world of narcissism is bad, but self-indulgence is good. The line is often hard to understand. Am I allowed to call myself amusing or think of myself that way? Is that bar too high? Ever hear a comedian purposely trying to be funny? It can be painful to watch. And yet, these stigmas of what I can or can’t be often define me, and I am sure I am not alone in this. Times a thousand for females, times a million for minorities, times infinitely more with both, oh and a single parent, whoo. Multiply more of you are poor. I am exhausted even thinking about the social stigmas others endure daily.
We often only live up to the standards we believe we can. Instead of putting limits on what we can achieve, maybe we need to remove the roadblocks and lead the way. Oops, this unknowingly took a deeper tangent, but I am feeling it.
Too be funny or not to be, that is my choice.
I choose to laugh and not be defined by other’s arbitary definitions.
What makes something funny to you? What makes you wet your pants and roll on the floor? Or, what makes you slightly chuckle?
Keep the laughter going.

As I said earlier, potty humor is very entertaining.
